Genesis 11:4 – “And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
The motivation for the construction of the Tower of Babel was clearly revealed in the Scripture, it was to make a name for themselves. And this is why they ended with division and confusion among themselves, because everyone wanted to be seen and glorified.
We in Christ cannot have this mindset of making a name for ourselves in anything we do, because this would always bring division and confusion in the body, and a divided body is no longer a body. We must henceforth put the self aside and desire only to make a name for Jesus. This is why Paul advises us in Philippians 2:3 to “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others above yourselves”. Some boast in chariots and in horses, but we make our boast in the name that has worth and salvation power. We project the name above all names; Jesus. Is it just a name? No! The name is a representative of His office. Our boast therefore is in His death burial and resurrection; in this we derive our true value and eternal worth.
